Boarding at Barnard Castle School

Welcome to Boarding @ Barney! Boarding at Barney is full of warmth, friendship, and opportunity. Our boarding family is made up of pupils from a variety of countries, with the largest percentage coming from UK-based families. Many of our boarders live locally and choose to ‘beat the bus,’ using the time saved on travel to get ahead with studies or enjoy morning activities.

From our youngest boarders in Year 3 to our Sixth Formers preparing for life beyond school, every pupil is part of a diverse and supportive community. Our four Boarding Houses are places where enduring friendships are made, lifelong memories are created, and pupils grow into independent, confident, and responsible Barnardians.

A True Sense of Family

At Barney, our House system is the heart of school life. Our Housemasters, Housemistresses, matrons, and tutors work together to create an environment that pupils aspire to be part of—one that is filled with enthusiasm, House spirit, and, above all, a sense of family. Senior pupils take pride in mentoring and coaching younger ones, ensuring that every boarder feels supported and included in our close-knit community.

Although House competitions—spanning academia, sports, and the arts—bring plenty of excitement and friendly rivalry, there is a deep sense of togetherness that defines our boarding experience. Our Boarders champion this ethos, building relationships that extend far beyond their time at Barney.

A Busy and Fulfilled Life

Boarding at Barney is far more than just a place to sleep and study—it’s a rich and vibrant experience. With structured, supervised prep time each evening and an extensive evening and weekend activity programme, there is always something happening. Trips, competitions, and social events keep our pupils busy, engaged, and inspired, ensuring a well-rounded and fulfilling school life.

Families choose boarding for many reasons—whether to avoid long daily commutes, to gain early independence before university, or to experience living in a new country. We offer a range of boarding options, including full-time, flexi, and occasional boarding, to suit the needs of individual families.

Staying Connected

Exeat weekends throughout the term allow pupils to visit home, while those who wish to stay at school enjoy a relaxed, family-style atmosphere. Parents are always welcome at Barney to attend Chapel services, Drama and Music performances, and sporting fixtures throughout the year.

Our Boarding Houses
